[November 22, 1963] President Kennedy has been assassinated

by Gideon Marcus

We interrupt the Journey's normal publication schedule to bring you breaking news.

According to several television, radio, and wire services, John F. Kennedy was shot twice, at around 12:30 p.m., CST, as his motorcade traveled through Dealey Plaza in Dallas.  The gravely injured President was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead of his wounds shortly thereafter.  Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as Kennedy's successor one hour later.

At about the same time, President Kennedy's assailant was apprehended by local law enforcement, but not before the killer slew a Dallas police officer.

We will have more details on this event as they come in.  In addition, several of the Journey staff will be submitting observations on the events: their impact on themselves and those around them.  We welcome yours as well.

Please stay tuned.  Be strong.  We are all in this crisis together.

Together, we will get through it.

  1. I heard the newsflash on BBC TV about two and a half hours ago. 'Tonight' was cut short and then we had the bulletin from the BBC announcing the death.

Our two channels have gone back to advertised programming; for some reason they're showing 'Doctor Finlay's Casebook' which seems a bit too cheery for this evening. There's a new BBC science fiction serial on tomorrow night called 'Doctor Who' – not sure if that will air depending on what happens in the US.

Anyway, it's a huge shock here. I'll have to talk to my colleagues at the bank Monday, but I doubt we'll be in much mood to work. The leader of the Free World is dead. I sincerely hope the Russians weren't involved in any way – I'm sure they don't too.

  2. I heard the news while I was settling in for an evening in front of the TV, when the nightly news started a few minutes late with the news of John F. Kennedy's assassination.

We're all in shock over here. My thoughts are with Mrs. Kennedy and her two children and with everybody in America.

  3. I understand that Texas Governor John Connally was seriously injured as well.  Let us spare a moment to hope for his recovery while we, and the whole world, mourn for the President and his family.

  4. Lee Harvey Oswald, a US Navy deep cover intelligence operative who was posted to the USSR, looks like being set up to take the rap.
